Note. Although most generations have been found, the chart includes every one known, sometimes one is missing. This Ancestor has been given a Name where a Date is first then some words. For Example "1645 Sage" is a Missing Sage NOT a real one. They must have lived in life, just left no written record, just children.

Names take my normal form, "John Sage 1742" is a real person born in 1742. Where a actual date (dd Month yyyy form) appears in the details it has been found written down on a document from that time, Parish Records, or Birth Death Wedding Certificates, Census returns searched and persons/information found included. Where a Date is a Year only then it has not been proven. Example, children born but no record of marriage then the Marriage would be a year before birth. All births were not recorded so date is 21 Years before Marriage or 22 before Birth. Deaths are all from Records.

Sages associated with the Ritchie Family are nearly up-to-date, living ones not included. All other Sages stop about 1881 census time.

Sage in Scotland, Trees.

The Sage name in Scotland is first found in the Inverness area. Using a bit of logic they can be traced back to 1590 to a IMAGINARY ancestor Descendants First Inverness Sage This Tree is 936k Bytes so is big.

To reduce the size of the tree have divided it up as follows,

Donald Sage 1720 is not in the small trees above. A couple of very small Trees have been missed out, they are included in the Big one.
The Locharron Missionary Sages are below. The modern spelling is Lochcarron but am using the form as in the 1700's.

From Inverness they spread to the surrounding areas, principally Petty, Ardclach, Auldearn, Grange and up to Locharron for the Missionary Sages. Descendants Locharron Sages, Missionary The Missionary Sages are well documented and have some characters amongst them, The story is accessed below.

Then to Perth. Sages From Auldearn to Perth This is more fully covered in the Family Section.

The curious thing is that by the 1841 census they had vanished from the North. After 1745 in this area it was a time of turmoil, they lived in the villages and Parish's that are adjacent to the Battle of Culloden. The Sages would not have been directly involved as they were all Protestant, however the Butcher Cumberland's Hanovarian Troopers earned a unenviable reputation for savagely pursuing and hanging anyone they thought of as Rebels. As well as this the Highland Land Owners cleared the Estates of people to make way for sheep. No wonder so many people emigrated, however they did not leave a forwarding address so they cannot be traced. See See Last Sages in Inverness.

In the 1841 census only one person can be found in the Inverness, Nairn and Banff areas. as you can see on the Charts at one time a considerable number of people over a long time lived in this area. Some have been traced into the Glasgow area and the rest must be in the Unknown Fathers List.

Apart from this it is amazing how many Girl children the later Inverness folk had. The effect of course was that the Sage name would vanish. However that would not account for all the lines.

A Family of Sages with a name of Kenneth appear. They originate in 1647 in St Mary St., Marlebone, London. From there they arrive in Cawdor then Edenkillie then down to Inverary in Argyll. These places are all extremely rural. The Scots ones went to a area famous for Whisky Production and Smuggling, they may have been Revenue Officers. By 1791 whisky production had been normalised in Edenkeillie but smuggling was normal in the West until the Sage appearred about 1760. So far evidence to prove Sage as Revenue Men has not been found.Descendants Kenneth Sage

Apart from the major lines above some others have surfaced, there must have been a Coach Builder Sage, three sons arrive at similar dates, one leaves other stays, another turns into a Coach Lace Weaver Descendants Coach Builders. All the children are Female so that line stops quick.

Others pop up then Vanish. Many are collected into a Chart Called Descendants Unknown Father or Visitor Sages these are not Illegitimate just unrecorded.

Two Irish Sages have been found Descendants Irish Origin Sages
